What should I be looking for in a distributor?
If you’re new to music distribution, there are some important factors to look for when choosing the best music distributor to upload your music on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and all major music platforms.
The main things to look for are;
Keeping your rights
This is a given, right? By owning your master recordings, you retain creative control with the freedom to release your music however and whenever you like. Never give up your rights, which you don’t with Spinnup, and never lock yourself into a service that doesn’t let you cancel whenever you like.
Keeping your royalties
Fees vary per distributor. Some charge a flat rate, some charge per single or album, and some will be free but then take a percentage of your royalties. How willing are you to give up some of your revenue to the distributor? What is the distributor offering in exchange that makes the commission worth it?
While it might seem like a no-brainer to distribute your music for free in exchange for a percentage of your royalties, you can end up forking out way more to a distributor in the long run as you’ll be paying them a percentage for as long as your music is distributed via their service.
In our opinion it’s best to avoid any distributor that wants to take a cut of your profits or who wants any percentage of the rights to your music, and we have always paid artists 100% of what they earn.
Music stores: quality over quantity
Most distribution services will post to the major platforms like Apple Music and Spotify, but there might be some specific ones that you want your music to be on, that are skewed to certain genres or regions. For example, Spinnup is one of the only major distribution platforms that services releases to specialist EDM store Beatport.
Some distributors will send your music to over 100 stores, but the reality is that you will make the majority of your revenue from the major players and any platforms specific to your region. So having your music on all those stores won’t necessarily benefit you so don’t be lured in by big numbers.
What tools do they have?
What tools do they provide that you can use to learn about your audience and further your career? Do they have promotional tools? Do they gather information to provide you detailed analytics and demographics? For example, at Spinnup you can use our daily streaming figures and detailed sales reports to understand your audience even better. Or use our Artist Site tool to create your free website you can use to promote yourself and your music.
Do they offer client support and/or growth opportunities?
As well as putting your music out there, some distributors offer resources of discovery such as playlisting and sync licensing. Some have industry links or opportunities to work with partnering companies or brands. As part of Universal Music, Spinnup has a direct link to the industry professionals at the world’s leading record label who can kickstart your music career and get you signed.
