Over 130 Spinnup artists have been signed to Universal Music Group labels since Spinnup opened in 2013. The past year (2021-2022) has been BIG for signings, with independent artists from across the globe securing record deals with some of the world’s most iconic music labels, and we have no doubt that there’s more to come. Check out some of this year’s signed artist stories below:
MIMAA: Island/Def Jam, 2022
In one of our biggest signings to date, French artist MIMMA joins one of UMG’s most iconic labels: Island/Def Jam. Back in 2020 MIMAA was selected to take part in Spinnup Lab, an incubation program run in collaboration with UMG France. During the program MIMAA worked closely with experts from across the business to develop her unique Latino/Gypsy-culture inspired sound and style. It was her firey flamenco track ‘Reina Latina’ which sparked the interest of Island/Def Jam A&Rs, and the rest, as they say, is history.
“I am so excited to finally announce that I have joined the Universal Music France family in the Island Def Jam team. I am so so so happy! Only a year ago I was doing my very first gig and today, the crazy adventure continues and it’s only getting crazier! Thank you to all my team at Island Def Jam for the trust and energy you have given me to take my releases to the next level.” – MIMAA.
Advents: Universal Music Publishing, 2021
Four-piece indie/alternative band based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia sealed a publishing deal with UMP in late 2021, marking Spinnup Asia’s third signing to Universal Music Group after RIIDEM and Advaitha. In an interview with Spinnup Asia last year, the boy band said they were ‘very excited’ about this ‘first big step’ in their music career. Safe to say, we are too!
Joy Anonymous: Island Records (UK), 2021
Joy Anonymous started releasing music with Spinnup way back in 2017. But in 2021 things really kicked off for the London-based duo when they headed down to the SouthBank of the Thames to play some tunes and bring the Joy back to the quietened streets of the locked-down capital. Their unique sound, an eclectic fusion of disco, house and gospel caught the attention of Island Records label execs as much as it captured the hearts of their SouthBank Sessions attendees.
They have now released a full length album, ‘Human Again’, under Island and will be playing The Common stage at Glastonbury Festival this year.
Advaitha, UMG Singapore, 2021
18-year-old singer-songwriter Advaitha has sealed her distribution deal with Universal Music Singapore. Advaitha draws inspiration from R&B artists, citing Summer Walker, Kehlani and Brent Faiyaz as her biggest musical influences. Releasing her debut with Spinnup, we have seen Advaitha from the very start of her career which promises to be long and bright.
We’ll keep you updated as the signings continue to roll in over the coming months. In the meantime, to discover more from our signed artists, check out our Spinnup Signed playlist on Spotify.
