Social media certainly knows how to keep us on our toes, constantly evolving with new platforms and new features arriving every few months. The newest kid on the block is Instagram Reels, Instagram’s new short-form video feature set to take on TikTok. Like all other social media platforms, it’s perfect for artists and is definitely a platform you’ll want to utilise to promote your music and reach new fans.
What is Instagram Reels?
In August 2020 Instagram launched Reels, which quite simply is Instagram’s rival of TikTok, allowing artists to record, edit and upload 15-second multi-clip videos complete with audio, effects and new creative tools. The audio part is super important, as that can include effects but also your Spinnup-distributed music.
According to the official Instagram announcement, “you can share reels with your followers on Feed, and, if you have a public account, make them available to the wider Instagram community through a new space in Explore. Reels in Explore offers anyone the chance to become a creator on Instagram and reach new audiences on a global stage.”
That last part is important for you as an artist, as you’ll want your reels to reach as many Instagram users as possible to amplify your music.
How do you get your music on Instagram Reels?
Easy, distribute your music with Spinnup. Included in our list of stores we distribute to are Instagram, and their parent company Facebook, which means that any feature or function they build out with music capabilities will have your music there.

How do you create on Instagram Reels?
Open your Instagram camera like an Instagram story and tap “Reels” on the bottom of the screen. Here you can record short video sequences that you can edit and enhance with effects and sounds. To access your music, simply tap on the music icon and search for your Spinnup release.
There’s also a handy timer function letting you record yourself hands free, which we find means less editing work after. Alternatively, you can upload previously shot sequences from your phone and edit them in Instagram Reels.
Like with TikTok videos that incorporate choreography, a life hack or something funny tend to garner most attention and are the most likely to end up on the Explore page.
Is your Reel ready?
Once you’ve got your sequences all lined up and ready to go you can can choose to share it to your Reels or Stories, and you can also save as a draft to share later, perhaps at a time when you know most of your followers will be online. When you’re ready just tap ‘share’ and away you go!
You can choose whether your reel should be displayed on your main feed, only in the Reels tab, or both.
Don’t forget to share your content with us on Instagram and tag Spinnup in your Reels!
