Albin, the second artist to be signed to Universal Music from Spinnup, has blown up in the past few weeks with his hit Din Soldat. He’s currently #3 on Spotify top 100 in Sweden, with over 3 million streams. We had a little chat with Albin to find out more about how it all started and what the rest of the year has to offer!
Who is Albin and where are you from?
I’m a 24 year old rap/pop artist from Stockholm, I have a two year old and am in the middle of recording my upcoming EP which is due to be released after summer. This last month has been wonderfully chaotic since my single ‘Din Soldat’ was released and I’ve started prepping for a summer of live shows.
What is your musical background and when did you start making music?
I’ve never played any instruments or learnt how to sing; I’m really terrible at it! I started writing lyrics when I was 10 years old and fell in love with the words, with rap. I’ve been hooked ever since. Since then I have been writing rap lyrics and performing live at every opportunity; at home, competitions, clubs, and in venues. I have been writing daily for almost fifteen years, but have never learnt to play an instrument or sing.
Who/what inspires you?
I find inspiration in adversity. I need the drama, the struggles and the setbacks in my life in order to write. If everything is running smoothly I find it difficult to get inspired; I write my best lyrics when I’m frustrated or upset by a situation. Songs with happy lyrics rarely appeal to me but I am inspired by love; being in love is a really wonderful feeling but it can be intimidating and trigger a lot of emotions.
What inspired your latest release?
‘Din Soldat’ was written last fall when I was going through a tough time, I felt like I had run out of luck and after a bad year I felt as though nothing was working out for me; I needed someone who wanted to fight for me. At the same time, I was really inspired to be working with my current producer. It felt like it was a turning point in my music; from the very beginning when we were in the studio it felt completely right. We got into our rhythm really fast and wrote the lyrics in less than 30 minutes. Even back then it felt like the song could be really good!
How did you get together with Kristin Amparo? What was it like working with her?
I had never met Kristin before ‘Din Soldat’ but I admired her voice, I think she is one of Sweden’s best singers and I really wanted to work with her on this song. She is incredibly unique and interesting as an artist. We sent the song to her and as soon as she heard it she wanted to be involved. To be working with her is such a luxury; she is one of the finest people I have had the pleasure to work with.
When we all get together, Kristin, Mattias (our producer) and I, we only get good vibes. It’s inspiring for me to work with such talented people and I’m immensely grateful to both Kristin and Mattias; they put so much feeling into their work and I’ve evolved as an artist because of them. I’m working with Kristin on more songs and we’ve already finished another track together. I’m hoping Mattias will write and produce everything I release in the future!
What has the response to your music been like? What were your expectations?
‘Din Soldat’ has a life of its own. The response from fans has been unreal; they found the track online and shared it via blogs/ Facebook/ Instagram etc which is what made it a hit. We released the song ourselves via Spinnup, had no budget to promote the track and the only radio station to play it was EastFm. It basically took off by itself and I’m so happy and grateful to everyone who helped us get where we are. I can’t believe that it’s in the Swedish Top 20 on Spotify and is the fifth most played song by a Swedish artist – it’s just incredible, I didn’t expect any of this! Especially coming from where we started – running everything ourselves in the beginning, then getting a call from Universal the day after it was released… It was a pleasant surprise to say the least!
What does 2014 have to offer? What’s happening next?
At the moment we’re in the middle of writing and recording and I’m playing live throughout summer around Sweden. Late in the fall I’ll be releasing two singles and an EP, before touring again… So it will be very busy!
To celebrate the success of Albin, we’re currently offering all Spinnup artists the first year off when distributing a single. Just enter the voucher code DinSoldat in the payment step and you’re good to go! The code expires on July 31st.
